Will Dobson Makes Memorable Professional Debut
17-Year-Old Midfielder Impresses in Match Against Melbourne City
Rising Star Reflects on Dream Moment at McDonald Jones Stadium
On a thrilling Saturday night, 17-year-old Will Dobson made his professional debut for the Newcastle Jets, entering the pitch during the closing moments of their A-League clash against Melbourne City at McDonald Jones Stadium. Dobson, who signed a scholarship contract in August, was brought on in the 89th minute, immediately making his presence felt with a calm display and sharp passing.
“It was a surreal moment hearing my family and friends cheering me on from behind the dugout,” Dobson shared. “I’ve been in those stands as a fan, so to step out there as a player was an amazing feeling.”
From Academy Star to First-Team Debut
Dobson’s rise within the Jets system has been nothing short of remarkable. After earning the 2023 Jets Academy Player of the Year award and helping lead the Youth team to an unbeaten run in the FNSW League Two competition, the central midfielder now finds himself on the cusp of a promising professional career.
“I’m really proud of myself,” Dobson said. “Right now, I’m just enjoying the experience and taking things day by day. My goal is to keep improving, train hard, and earn more game time as the season progresses.”
Balancing Football and School
Dobson, a student at Hunter Sports High, has not only been making waves on the pitch but is also balancing the realities of being a young athlete. When asked about returning to school after his debut, he said with a smile, “Yeah, it’ll be fun. I’ve got Monday off from training, so I might pop into school, catch up with my friends and teachers. Some of them were here tonight, so it’ll be nice to have a chat.”
As Dobson continues his journey in professional football, the young midfielder’s debut will undoubtedly be remembered as a pivotal moment in what could be a standout career.
