Rising Above the Past for a Promising Future

After capturing the 2023 Supporters’ Shield, FC Cincinnati is primed to chase a larger milestone in the Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs: securing their inaugural MLS Cup title. With a journey that began in turmoil, as they endured three consecutive Wooden Spoons from 2019 to 2021, Cincinnati has transformed under the guidance of head coach Pat Noonan into one of the league’s most formidable squads. Their season of redemption now culminates in a high-stakes showdown against New York City FC, whom they’ll face in a Round One, Best-of-3 series at TQL Stadium this Monday.

“The pressure in the playoffs demands a sharper focus,” remarked Noonan on playoff intensity. “Tactics might take a back seat to minimizing mistakes, but every small detail matters. One error can define the outcome at this stage.”

FC Cincinnati vs. NYCFC – A Clash of Eastern Conference Rivals

While FC Cincinnati’s Supporters’ Shield triumph has positioned them as one of the Cup favorites, Noonan remains cautious about underestimating NYCFC. The two clubs split their regular-season series, with Cincinnati winning 1-0 in March, but suffering a narrow 3-2 loss to NYCFC in October.

“They’re a team that challenges us, especially if we’re not aggressive in our pressing game or lose individual battles,” Noonan explained. “Our last matchup highlighted areas where we need to be more precise, especially when defending closer to goal or maintaining possession under pressure.”

Luciano Acosta – The Playmaker and MVP Candidate

Central to Cincinnati’s pursuit of an MLS Cup is midfielder Luciano Acosta, whose performances this season have been pivotal. Tied for the league’s highest assist count (19) and leading the team with 14 goals, Acosta’s consistency and creative flair have made him a top contender for the 2023 Landon Donovan MLS MVP award. Noonan emphasized Acosta’s importance, stating, “His season easily places him in the MVP conversation. Without him, we wouldn’t be where we are.”

Acosta’s resilience, despite injuries, has been key to his current form. “Lucho’s as healthy now as he’s been in months,” said Noonan. “Even in training, he’s highly engaged, and although he’s tough and battles injuries daily, his awareness of the moment is strong. Monday’s game should show him at his best.”

A Community Poised for History

For Cincinnati, the journey to this stage symbolizes both grit and growth, fostering excitement among fans who have supported them through highs and lows. A club once in rebuild mode is now on the brink of an extraordinary achievement: lifting its first MLS Cup and solidifying a new chapter in club history.
