Oceania Football Confederation Invites Australian Clubs to Join 2026

The Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), in partnership with Football Australia and the Australian Government, is inviting Australian-based clubs to participate in the upcoming OFC Professional League. This move, set to debut in 2026, seeks to strengthen football’s presence across Oceania while bridging cultural and economic connections between the Pacific and Australia.

The OFC’s plan to welcome an Australian club reflects the robust Pacific communities established within Australia and the ease of travel between Australia and other Pacific nations. This inclusion offers numerous advantages: enhanced visibility for the league, elevated competitive standards, new economic links, and crucial development paths for emerging Pacific football talent. An Australian presence in the league could also deepen regional ties, foster partnership growth, and contribute significantly to Oceania’s football aspirations.

Briefing Session for Interested Clubs

OFC and Football Australia are hosting a briefing session in Brisbane for interested parties. The session will take place on Tuesday, November 12, at 6:00 pm local time, at Rydges South Bank Hotel in the Podium 5 Meeting Room. This event offers stakeholders a chance to explore the league’s objectives, structure, and benefits. Clubs and representatives wishing to attend in person or via video link can register by emailing media@oceaniafootball.com.

OFC’s Vision and the Path to 2026

In 2019, the OFC Executive Committee took steps to assess the feasibility of a regional professional league. This initiative aligns with the OFC Vision 2026, aiming for Oceania to have two representative teams in the FIFA World Cup 2026™. In response, the OFC Professional League Taskforce was formed, comprising regional and international sports experts, to study and strategize the viability of a competition that would elevate the standard of football in Oceania.

The taskforce has since expanded, adding independent advisors from multiple disciplines to gather diverse perspectives and recommendations for the league’s optimal launch. These advisory efforts reinforce OFC’s commitment to a sustainable professional competition that benefits players, fans, and stakeholders alike.

What is the OFC Professional League?

Set to debut as a standalone competition, the OFC Professional League aims to revolutionize football in Oceania by establishing a professional, competitive structure for the region. This initiative will develop pathways for emerging talent, enabling young players to grow within a professional framework and reducing the need to seek opportunities abroad. Besides raising the level of play, the league will create economic benefits, such as increased sponsorships and partnerships with local businesses.

Beyond the sport itself, the OFC Professional League is about community and unity, fortifying regional collaboration across OFC’s Member Associations. It’s designed to foster international visibility for the region, drawing attention to Oceania’s talents and aligning with OFC’s goal of elevating football in the Pacific to a global standard.

A Structure for Regional Inclusion and Growth

The OFC Executive Committee has reviewed various formats for the league, ensuring a structure that accommodates participation from all Member Associations across the Pacific. The competition will support clubs, coaches, referees, and administrators while promoting governance standards and rewarding on-field excellence. It will complement the current OFC Men’s Champions League and domestic leagues, enhancing the competitive landscape for players, clubs, and fans across the region.

With a commitment to inclusivity, governance, and growth, the OFC Professional League represents a key milestone in the development of football within Oceania, promising to leave a lasting legacy and uplift the sport in the Pacific for generations to come.
