Paul Temple Confident Ahead of Phoenix’s Clash
Wellington Phoenix head coach Paul Temple remains optimistic as his team prepares for Friday night’s Unite Round fixture against Adelaide United at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium in Sydney. Despite a tough start to their A-League Women’s campaign, Temple believes the Phoenix are close to turning their fortunes around.
The Phoenix, still seeking their first points of the season, face an Adelaide side sitting third on the table with two wins in their opening three matches.
“It’s like anything, we just need that first win,” Temple told reporters via Zoom from the team’s Sydney base. “Once we get that, the whole world feels different. We’re trying not to let it weigh us down.”
Adelaide’s Strong Start, Phoenix’s Growing Chemistry
Temple acknowledged Adelaide’s impressive form, noting their fluid passing game and potent attack.
“They’ve started very well, scoring consistently in all their games. Their attacking trio can cause problems,” he said. “Friday night should be an exciting tactical battle, and we’re looking forward to the challenge.”
While Adelaide has momentum, the Phoenix have focused on refining their strategy and building team cohesion during their week-long camp in Sydney.
“It’s been great timing for us to bond and work on what’s been missing,” Temple added. “We’ve highlighted areas for improvement, particularly in the attacking third, and morale remains high within the group.”
Injury Updates and Captain Longo’s Return
The Phoenix have endured setbacks with Rebecca Lake sidelined for the season and Imane Chebel returning home. However, there’s good news for captain Annalie Longo, who could feature against Adelaide after scans cleared her of fractures or a concussion following a collision in their previous match.
“She trained with the team and feels positive,” Temple said. “She may wear a protective mask for added safety, but her recovery has been incredible given the initial concerns.”
