The Wellington Phoenix celebrated their first win of the 2024-25 Ninja A-League season with a hard-fought 1-0 triumph over Adelaide United at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium on Friday night.

Maya McCutcheon, the American midfielder in her debut A-League season, delivered the decisive goal in first-half stoppage time, nodding home a crucial strike after sustained Phoenix pressure. The defensive resilience from coach Paul Temple’s side in the second half ensured all three points for the team, marking a breakthrough performance after early-season frustrations.

“It’s surreal. My first professional goal—it feels amazing to share this moment with our fans,” McCutcheon said post-match.

Wellington Controls the First Half but Faces Adelaide’s Pressure

The Phoenix set the tone early, creating several chances in the first half. Olivia Ingham and Alyssa Whinham forced saves from Adelaide’s goalkeeper Claudia Jenkins, while Olivia Fergusson and McCutcheon tested the Reds’ backline with their attacking runs.

Adelaide had their moments, with Fiona Worts coming closest for the Reds, narrowly sending a shot over the bar five minutes before halftime. However, the Phoenix capitalized on their dominance in stoppage time when Mebae Tanaka’s well-placed free-kick caused chaos in the box, allowing McCutcheon to head home from close range.

“We showed grit, determination, and character to keep a clean sheet against a strong attacking side,” said head coach Paul Temple.

Second Half Resilience Secures the Win

Adelaide came out strong after the break, controlling possession and probing for an equalizer. However, Wellington’s defense, led by stand-in captain Mackenzie Barry and Tiana Jaber, held firm. Goalkeeper Carolina Vilão had a quiet night as the backline limited Adelaide to speculative efforts.

Temple’s tactical changes, including a late shift to a five-player defense, ensured Phoenix kept their lead intact. Manaia Elliott and Ella McMillan added fresh legs on the counterattack, with Elliott coming close to doubling the lead in the 80th minute.

The final whistle confirmed a historic victory for Wellington, who now turn their focus to a home clash against Brisbane Roar in two weeks, following an international football break.
