Melbourne City Holds Sydney FC to a Thrilling 1-1 Draw

Melbourne City maintained their unbeaten start to the A-League Women’s season, battling Sydney FC to a 1-1 draw in an action-packed Unite Round clash at Jubilee Stadium. Early goals from Mackenzie Hawkesby and Lourdes Bosch set the stage for an intense rematch of last season’s Grand Final.

 Early Fireworks Set the Tone

Sydney FC wasted no time taking the lead, as Mackenzie Hawkesby unleashed a right-footed strike from outside the box in the 6th minute. The reigning champions looked poised to control the match, but Melbourne City had other plans.

Just five minutes later, Lourdes Bosch showcased her form with a stunning long-range effort, her third goal in four matches. Assisted by Rhianna Pollicina, Bosch’s equalizer brought the game level and shifted momentum back to the visitors.

City goalkeeper Malena Mieres played a crucial role in the first half, making key saves to deny Sydney’s wind-assisted offensive push.

 Second-Half Battle Ends in Deadlock

City head coach Michael Matricciani made an attacking change at halftime, introducing Bryleeh Henry to add firepower. City came close to breaking the deadlock when Mariana Speckmaier’s header narrowly missed the far post.

Defensive leaders Rebekah Stott and Alexia Apostolakis made aggressive runs down the right, keeping Sydney’s defense under pressure. However, despite their efforts and flashes of brilliance, City could not find the decisive goal.

The 1-1 draw keeps Melbourne City unbeaten with two wins and two draws this season, highlighting their consistency against top-tier opponents.
