Adelaide United Women celebrated a significant milestone with their 1-0 triumph over Central Coast Mariners on Saturday, marking their first-ever victory against the Mariners. Head coach Adrian Stenta praised the team’s resilience and discussed the crucial elements contributing to their success.

Building Momentum and Confidence

Reflecting on the team’s performance, Stenta emphasized the importance of consistency.

“A real positive for us to get a second win in a row with another strong performance. Before the game, we talked about trying to build consistency, momentum, and getting on a run in this part of the season. Starting with a win and a strong performance in the first game of this two-game away trip is really positive. I’m pleased the players were able to get some reward for their effort,” he said.

The win also marked Adelaide’s third away victory in four matches this season, highlighting their impressive form on the road.

A Historic First Against the Mariners

Stenta expressed pride in the team for creating a historic moment by defeating the Mariners for the first time in the club’s history.

“This side has been quite good at creating historical moments for the club during my time here, so that’s been pleasing. It’s a tough place to come and get a result, so that’s a real positive for us. It will build a lot of confidence within the group,” Stenta noted.

Emily Hodgson Ends Eight-Year Goal Drought

Emily Hodgson’s goal was a standout moment of the match, breaking her eight-year scoring drought.

“I’m super happy and excited for Em Hodgson to have scored. We’ve been encouraging her to get on the scoreboard for weeks now. She’s been working super hard in training, and it’s great to see her efforts pay off,” said Stenta.

Hodgson’s advanced role this season has given her more opportunities to contribute offensively, and the team is thrilled with her progress.

Defensive Resurgence and Clean Sheets

Adelaide’s defensive resilience shone brightly with another clean sheet, their fifth of the season.

“It’s something we identified in the postseason review. We conceded far too many goals last year, so we’ve worked hard on our defensive actions as a team,” Stenta explained.

Goalkeeper Claudia, supported by a cohesive defensive line, delivered a stellar performance, with the team showcasing their commitment to shutting down quality chances.

Preparing for Newcastle Jets

Adelaide United is now focused on their next challenge against Newcastle Jets. The team will recover and train in Terrigal before heading to Newcastle later in the week.

“The players are in good spirits. It’s not a bad place to spend a couple of days—the sun’s shining, the beach is here—so we’ll recharge, refresh, and prepare,” said Stenta.
