Cook Islands Snatch Late Draw Against Papua New Guinea in OFC U-16 Women’s Qualifier

RAROTONGA, Cook Islands — A last-minute penalty from captain Metuamaru Arere salvaged a crucial 1-1 draw for the Cook Islands against Papua New Guinea in the opening match of the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship 2025 – Qualifying phase.
In a tightly contested clash at Rarotonga, where a winning start was vital with only three teams competing for advancement, it was Papua New Guinea who struck first. Anjelika Raminai capitalized on loose defending in the ninth minute, calmly finishing from close range to give her side the early advantage.
Papua New Guinea nearly doubled their lead minutes later when April Sinowai raced clear but nudged her effort agonizingly wide of the post.
The hosts responded late in the first half, almost leveling through Mamia Piri-Savage, whose long-range strike was mishandled by Papua New Guinea goalkeeper Helina George, only for the stopper to recover impressively with a critical save from the ensuing corner.
Reinvigorated after halftime, the Cook Islands pressed forward with intent. Tehanarei Nga threatened with a breakaway effort, while Arere consistently spearheaded the attack, drawing a pair of strong saves from George.
Despite their relentless push, frustration mounted for the hosts as time ticked away — until deep into stoppage time when a break involving Arere earned the Cook Islands a penalty. The captain stepped up and converted confidently, sending George the wrong way and securing a vital point for the home side.
The result leaves all to play for with American Samoa awaiting both teams in the remaining matches of the qualifying campaign.
Final Score:
Cook Islands 1 (Metuamaru Arere (P) 90+6′)
Papua New Guinea 1 (Anjelika Raminai 9′)
