Hall Returns as Black Knights Maintain Seven-Point Lead

Auckland, New Zealand – Auckland FC extended their lead at the top of the A-League table but were denied victory after conceding a last-minute equalizer in a 2-2 draw against Central Coast Mariners at Go Media Stadium.

While the result marked Auckland’s third successive draw, the match was defined by the return of key defender Dan Hall, who made his long-awaited comeback after missing most of the season due to injury. Hall’s presence was critical in the absence of Nando Pijnaker and Louis Verstraete, providing much-needed experience at the back.

Early Dominance and May’s Opener

Auckland FC started the match with high intensity and found the breakthrough just ten minutes in. Jesse Randall delivered a teasing cross into the box, allowing Guillermo May to rise above the Mariners’ defense and head home from close range—his eighth goal of the season.

Despite Auckland’s attacking momentum, the visitors struggled to capitalize on their chances. The Mariners gradually found their rhythm towards the end of the first half, but a spectacular save from goalkeeper Alex Paulsen preserved the Black Knights’ lead heading into the break.

Elliot’s Impact and Late Drama

The second half was a more balanced affair, with both sides pushing for control. Central Coast eventually found their equalizer in the 72nd minute with a goal that mirrored Auckland’s opener. However, Head Coach Steve Corica had already planned a key substitution—bringing on Callan Elliot for Brimmer—a move that paid off instantly.

Just moments after conceding, Auckland responded in style. Elliot fired a powerful volley at the near post following a headed assist from captain Tomoki Sakai, restoring the home side’s lead and igniting the crowd of 14,040.

As Auckland FC looked to close out the game, disaster struck in stoppage time. Central Coast capitalized on a scrappy goalmouth scramble to snatch a dramatic late equalizer, leaving the home side frustrated.

Despite the result, Auckland FC remains seven points clear at the top of the A-League standings with six games remaining in the regular season.
