New Zealand’s top club secures promising Australian talent ahead of January transfer window.

A Strategic Signing for Auckland FC

Auckland FC has bolstered its attacking options with the signing of Marlee François, a 22-year-old Australian winger. François, who previously developed his career at Premier League side Fulham F.C. and Championship club Bristol City, brings speed, versatility, and international experience to the club.

The right-footed attacker, known for his preference to operate on the left, joins Auckland FC despite being currently without a club. Having been released by Bristol City in July, François is able to link up with the squad before the official transfer window opens on January 16.

Head coach Steve Corica expressed his excitement about François’ arrival, saying, “He’s young, quick, and skilled with the ball at his feet. He has the ability to play on either side of the midfield, giving us great tactical flexibility. The club has done a fantastic job presenting him with the vision of Auckland FC and the opportunities both the city and team can offer.”

François’ Promising Journey

Born in Campbelltown, New South Wales, François moved to the UK at the age of 11 with his brother Tyrese after being signed by Fulham’s Academy. Following a stint at Fulham, François joined Bristol City in 2019 and secured a professional contract in 2021.

While injuries hindered his progress at Bristol City, François managed to make two FA Cup appearances, including a memorable match against Manchester City. On the international stage, he has represented Australia’s U-23 team, the Olyroos, earning six caps and scoring a crucial goal in a 2-0 win against Mexico.

“Coming to Auckland is a fresh start for me,” François shared. “This club is on the rise, sitting at the top of the league. I’m eager to learn, play, and grow my career here. I can’t wait to meet my teammates and see what makes this club so unique.”

Building Toward the Future

Although François missed Auckland FC’s recent away game against Perth, one of the longest trips in professional football, he is expected to join training upon the team’s return. His debut could come as soon as January 18, when Auckland FC faces Melbourne City in a high-stakes home game.

The 5 p.m. kickoff at Auckland’s home ground promises an electric atmosphere, complete with the popular Auckland FC beach fan zone. Tickets for the match are already on sale.
