Brisbane Roar Take Advantage as Victory Struggle
Playing their third match in just 12 days, Melbourne Victory Women faced a daunting task against a high-flying Brisbane Roar side. Fatigue and relentless pressure from the home team culminated in a 2-0 defeat for Victory, leaving them three points adrift of their rivals on the Ninja A-League Women’s ladder.
Early Resilience Meets Ruthless Execution
Victory held firm against Brisbane’s opening onslaught, with goalkeeper Courtney Newbon delivering a stellar performance to deny early threats. Her reflexes were tested in the 22nd minute when a thunderous strike from Emily Pringle was deflected onto the woodwork. Unfortunately for Victory, Grace Kuilamu seized the rebound, slotting home the opener to give Brisbane the lead.
The Roar continued to pile on the pressure, exploiting Victory’s fatigued defense. In a near-replica of the first goal, Kuilamu netted her second of the night after a fierce shot from Sharn Freier was parried into her path by Newbon. With a commanding 2-0 advantage, Brisbane entered halftime firmly in control.
Improved Defense, Lackluster Attack
Victory regrouped for the second half, showing greater defensive discipline. Jeff Hopkins introduced Laura Pickett in a bid to spark a comeback, and the backline conceded just one shot on target after the break. However, creating opportunities in the attacking third remained a challenge for the Navy Blue.
Substitutes Ella O’Grady and Sofia Sakalis provided brief moments of creativity, but clear-cut chances were few and far between. Emily Gielnik managed two shots on target during counter-attacks, yet Brisbane’s defense stood resolute.
Roar Secure Crucial Points
With their lead intact, Brisbane Roar comfortably saw out the match, extending their cushion over Melbourne Victory to three points and solidifying their second-place standing on the ladder. Victory remain in third place but face mounting pressure to regain form.
Looking Ahead
Melbourne Victory Women remain on the road for their next fixture, traveling to face Newcastle Jets on January 11. The team will need to regroup quickly to stay competitive in the tightly contested A-League Women’s season.
