Chicago Fire FC Secure Rising Star Christopher Cupps

Homegrown Defender Signs Multi-Year Contract with MLS Club
Chicago Fire FC has bolstered its defensive ranks by signing 16-year-old homegrown talent Christopher Cupps, the club announced on Tuesday. The highly-rated US youth international has committed to a four-year guaranteed contract through 2028, with club options extending into 2029 and 2030.
A Product of Chicago’s Youth Development Pipeline
Cupps’ signing underscores Chicago Fire FC’s dedication to nurturing homegrown talent. A native of the Windy City, he has progressed through the club’s youth system, from Chicago Fire Youth Soccer to the academy and now the first team.
“We’re excited to sign another young, high-potential player who has developed within our system,” said Chicago Fire FC director of football and head coach Gregg Berhalter. “Chris was born and raised in Chicago and has climbed through the ranks, demonstrating firsthand the commitment this club has to developing local talent. We believe Chris has a bright future and look forward to supporting his continued growth.”
Cupps’ Rise Through the Ranks
The young defender made 15 appearances for Chicago Fire II during the 2024 MLS NEXT Pro season, gaining valuable experience at the professional level. He also participated in the first leg of the 2025 preseason camp with the club’s first team, signaling his readiness for the next stage in his career.
Internationally, Cupps recently played a key role in helping the United States advance to the FIFA U-17 World Cup, excelling in the Concacaf qualification campaign.
“It’s a privilege to represent my hometown, and I’m incredibly happy to sign for the club that I’ve grown up in,” said Cupps. “It’s a dream come true to start my professional career so close to my family, who have supported me throughout my journey so far.”
“I want to thank all my coaches and teammates who have helped me grow as a person and player. I’m excited to enter this new era with the club and work towards bringing success to Chicago.”
Chicago Fire FC’s Commitment to Homegrown Talent
Cupps is the third homegrown player signed under Berhalter’s tenure, following midfielders Dylan Borso and Robert Turdean. He becomes the 27th homegrown signing in club history, reinforcing the Fire’s long-term strategy of developing young talent to compete at the highest level.
