In a game that will go down in history, All Whites striker Chris Wood celebrated his 33rd birthday in style, leading Nottingham Forest to a dramatic 3-2 victory over Manchester United in the English Premier League (EPL). Wood’s decisive goal not only sealed the win but also solidified his position as Forest’s leading scorer in the competition with an impressive 25 goals, surpassing the previous record held by Dutch international Bryan Roy.

Wood’s Record-Breaking Performance

Milestone Achievement for New Zealand’s Star Striker

Wood’s contribution came in the 54th minute when he headed in a goal that put Nottingham Forest ahead 3-1. Reflecting on his performance, Wood shared, “It’s fantastic. It’s nice that I can keep doing well for the team, and that’s all I want to do — keep pushing up and getting as many goals as possible for this team.”

With 10 goals in 15 matches this season, Wood is currently the third-highest scorer in the league, trailing only Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and Liverpool’s Mo Salah, who have each netted 13 goals. Nottingham Forest’s stellar form sees them occupying fifth place on the EPL table.

Manchester United’s Struggles Continue

New Manager Ruben Amorim Faces Early Challenges

The loss marks a challenging start for Manchester United’s new manager Ruben Amorim, who took over last month from Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon. Amorim experienced his first home league defeat since February 2023, further highlighting the enormity of the task ahead.

Goalkeeper Andre Onana’s costly error added to United’s woes. Two minutes into the second half, Onana misjudged a tame shot from Morgan Gibbs-White, diving the wrong way as the ball rolled into the net. Despite Rasmus Hojlund’s equalizer and Bruno Fernandes’ late goal, United couldn’t overcome the deficit.

Amorim remained optimistic, saying, “This is a long journey, and we are improving in some aspects.”

Title Race Tightens for Manchester City

Crystal Palace Holds Defending Champions to a Draw

Elsewhere in the league, Manchester City’s title defense took another hit with a 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. Although the defending champions ended a seven-game winless streak earlier in the week with a victory over Nottingham Forest, they dropped crucial points in their latest outing.

City, currently fourth in the standings and eight points behind league leaders Liverpool, faced an early setback as Daniel Munoz scored for Palace in the fourth minute. Despite goals from Erling Haaland and Rico Lewis, City could not secure the win. Lewis, who equalized in the 68th minute, was sent off late in the game for a second yellow card.

Manager Pep Guardiola acknowledged the challenges, stating, “We fought incredibly, we gave everything, we take the point. The season started difficult and will all season be difficult. We have to survive this season in every game.”

Aston Villa and Brentford Impress

Villa’s Resurgence and Newcastle’s Woes

Aston Villa continued their resurgence with back-to-back victories, edging Southampton 1-0 at Villa Park thanks to Jhon Duran’s first league start goal. Villa now sits just two points behind Manchester City. Meanwhile, Southampton remains bottom of the table, eight points adrift of safety.

In another thrilling encounter, Brentford secured a 4-2 win over Newcastle United. Goals from Bryan Mbeumo, Yoane Wissa, Nathan Collins, and Kevin Schade sealed the victory, extending Newcastle’s winless streak to four games.
