Saudi Pro League CEO Discusses Ronaldo and Neymar’s Potential Contract Extensions

The Saudi Pro League’s top stars, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar, face uncertain futures as their contracts edge closer to expiration. The league’s CEO, Omar Mugharbel, has shed light on the ongoing discussions surrounding the potential extensions of the football icons’ deals with Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal, respectively.

The Impact of Ronaldo and Neymar

Cristiano Ronaldo, who joined Al-Nassr in 2023, has been a transformative figure for the league, both on and off the pitch. Neymar, despite being sidelined by a long-term injury at Al-Hilal, continues to draw global attention due to his star power. With both players’ contracts set to expire next summer, their potential departures could significantly impact the league’s international appeal.

Speaking to FourFourTwo, Mugharbel acknowledged the profound influence of Ronaldo, stating, “It’s no secret that Ronaldo has created a massive impact on the league, both domestically and internationally. However, all discussions about his contract or re-signing are strictly between Ronaldo and Al-Nassr.”

Regarding Neymar, the CEO added, “Even though Neymar hasn’t been playing, his global following and community involvement bring immense value to the league. But again, the future depends on the discussions between him and Al-Hilal. We facilitate the process, but ultimately, the decision lies with the player and the club.”

Challenges in Retaining Superstars

The retention of marquee players like Ronaldo and Neymar is critical for the Saudi Pro League’s continued growth. Their presence has elevated the league’s visibility, attracting a wave of international talent and bolstering its reputation. However, should these stars seek opportunities elsewhere, the league could face challenges in maintaining its momentum.

Mugharbel emphasized that player-club dynamics are the driving force behind such decisions: “Clubs and players must express mutual interest in extending contracts. That accounts for 90% of the process.”

What’s Next for Ronaldo and Neymar?

Neymar’s Al-Hilal will next face Al-Khaleej on Saturday, while Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr host Al-Qadisiyah a day earlier. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on these two superstars and the pivotal decisions that could shape the future of the Saudi Pro League.
