MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) – Socceroos winger Daniel Arzani has finalized a move to Hungarian powerhouse Ferencvárosi TC, ending his two-season tenure with Melbourne Victory following the conclusion of the 2024-25 A-League campaign.
The 26-year-old, who had rediscovered his rhythm and form in the Isuzu UTE A-League, joins Ferencváros on a free transfer and is set to link up with former Premier League legend Robbie Keane, now manager of the Budapest-based club.
A-League Resurgence
Since arriving at Melbourne Victory in 2023, Arzani transformed into one of the club’s most creative and dynamic attacking forces. Over 64 appearances in two seasons, he scored seven goals and registered 12 assists, helping the team reach back-to-back A-League Grand Finals.
“My time at Melbourne Victory has been incredibly rewarding,” said Arzani in a club statement. “The club has played a key role in my growth both on and off the pitch. I’ve loved every moment — from the matches to the fans — and while I’m excited for the next chapter, I’ll always be grateful.”
His resurgence in domestic football also caught the eye of national selectors, earning him a recall to the Socceroos setup, reigniting hopes of a prominent role in the squad’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
Another Shot at Europe
This move marks Arzani’s second major attempt at establishing himself in Europe. He was signed by Manchester City in 2018 after a breakout performance at the FIFA World Cup in Russia, but his journey was marred by misfortune, particularly a devastating ACL tear on debut while on loan at Celtic.
Subsequent loan spells at FC Utrecht (Netherlands), AGF Aarhus (Denmark), and Lommel SK (Belgium) saw limited game time and inconsistency. But his return to Australia proved pivotal.
Arzani now gets a fresh start at Ferencváros — the most successful club in Hungarian history and frequent participants in European competitions — with the potential to finally live up to the promise he displayed as a teenage sensation.
Club and Country
Victory’s director of football, John Didulica, praised Arzani’s contributions and growth over the past two seasons.
“We are proud of how Daniel re-established himself as one of Australia’s most exciting players,” said Didulica. “Not only did he help us reach consecutive Grand Finals, but he also earned his way back into the national team. We wish him all the best as he takes this next step in Europe.”
Arzani becomes the second Melbourne Victory player this year to make the leap to Europe, following young defender Kasey Bos, who joined Bundesliga side Mainz.
Ferencváros, under Keane’s guidance, continue to strengthen their roster as they aim to dominate domestically and make a mark in UEFA competitions. For Arzani, it’s a chance for both redemption and evolution.
