Rising Star Debuts in Tense Bahrain Clash

A Night of Highs and Lows for the Socceroos

Hayden Matthews, a standout Sydney FC defender, made his Subway Socceroos debut during their thrilling 2-2 draw against Bahrain in the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup qualifiers.

The 20-year-old Isuzu UTE A-League talent officially became Socceroo number 648 in Riffa. His debut match was marked by Bahrain’s rapid-fire comeback in the second half, flipping the game on its head before Kusini Yengi’s dramatic 95th-minute equalizer salvaged a point for Australia.

Matthews, starting alongside Sydney teammate Anthony Caceres and Melbourne City’s captain Aziz Behich, demonstrated his composure and skill, playing a pivotal pass in the build-up to Australia’s opening goal within the first 40 seconds. The evening also saw contributions from Melbourne Victory’s Jason Geria and Western Sydney Wanderers captain Brandon Borrello, who entered the game as substitutes.

Popovic Reflects on a Wild Encounter

Socceroos Head Coach Hails Team’s Character

Head coach Tony Popovic lauded the team’s resilience in the post-match press conference.

“Crazy game,” Popovic summarized. “We started very well, scoring an early goal and controlling the first half. Bahrain didn’t pose a threat, and we had chances to double our lead. In these conditions, a second goal feels essential.”

However, Bahrain’s stunning equalizer and their subsequent go-ahead goal tested the Socceroos’ mettle. “It was a difficult moment for us,” Popovic admitted. “But the character shown to fight back and secure an important point speaks volumes about this team.”

With the draw, the Socceroos maintain second place in Group C in the third round of World Cup qualifying, trailing Japan by nine points and narrowly ahead of Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and China.

A Journey Eight Years in the Making

Matthews Reflects on His Milestone Moment

For Hayden Matthews, his debut marks the culmination of years of dedication. Having joined Sydney FC’s academy at just 12 years old, Matthews has spent eight seasons with the Sky Blues.

“It’s a pretty surreal feeling and a dream come true,” Matthews shared after the match. “This is something I’ve envisioned since joining the academy. To finally reach this milestone after eight years with Sydney FC is truly special.”

Reports suggest growing European interest in the talented center-back, with Sydney FC reportedly rejecting multiple bids in the recent transfer window.
