NEWCASTLE — In a move sure to energize fans and bolster team morale, the Newcastle Jets have re-signed veteran Japanese international Kota Mizunuma for the 2025-26 Isuzu UTE A-League Men season.

The 35-year-old winger made an immediate impact upon his arrival last season from J1 League powerhouse Yokohama F. Marinos, contributing two goals and four assists in just 12 appearances. His flair, creativity, and leadership made him a fan favorite in a short span, even as the Jets endured a challenging campaign, ultimately finishing ninth.

“I’m happy to be playing for the Jets again this season,” Mizunuma said in a club statement. “I’ve really enjoyed my time in Newcastle so far, and I’m already excited for what’s ahead. I’ll give it my all for the team and I hope that our fans come along to our games to make it a great season. Up the Jets!”

A Key Piece in a New Era

Mizunuma’s re-signing marks the first major squad move under new head coach Mark Milligan, who was appointed in May. Since the end of the 2024-25 season, the Jets have seen significant changes, with players like Dane Ingham, Ryan Scott, Matt Scarcella, Justin Vidic, Wellissol, Callum Timmins, Jacob Dowse, Charles M’Mombwa, and Zac Bowling all exiting the club.

Milligan made clear that retaining Mizunuma was a priority.

“It was very important to myself and the club that we have a player of Kota’s experience,” Milligan said. “From the outside looking in, it was evident that in a short space of time Kota not only had a huge impact on the field, but he quickly became a fan favourite.”

Milligan also emphasized Mizunuma’s role beyond his technical skills, highlighting his influence off the pitch.

“Kota will play a major role in what he brings as a player but just as importantly what he brings as a person. The leadership qualities he naturally possesses will help shape the future of the young players around him as well.”

Veteran Presence with Vision

With over a decade of experience in the Japanese top flight and a résumé that includes stints at clubs like FC Tokyo, Cerezo Osaka, and Yokohama F. Marinos, Mizunuma brings a level of maturity and professionalism that will be crucial to the Jets’ rebuild.

The 2025-26 season represents a turning point for Newcastle, who are hoping to return to the A-League Finals Series under Milligan’s leadership. Mizunuma’s retention signals the club’s intention to blend experience with youth development.

As the Jets look to reshape their identity on and off the pitch, keeping a figure like Mizunuma is both a footballing and symbolic statement. He will likely serve as a mentor for the next generation while still having plenty to contribute on matchdays.
