Liverpool Parade Turns Tragic as Car Hits Fans, Injuring 47

Liverpool’s celebratory Premier League parade turned into a scene of horror after a vehicle plowed into fans gathered in the city center. Merseyside Police confirmed that the incident, which injured 47 people including children, is not being treated as terrorism.
A 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area has been arrested and is believed to have been the driver. Authorities said he acted alone.
Multiple Casualties, Four Seriously Injured
The North West Ambulance Service reported that 27 people were hospitalized, with four remaining under care, including two in serious condition. The Chief Fire Officer confirmed that four individuals—one of them a child—were trapped under the vehicle.
Emergency services, including police units and paramedics, rushed to Water Street, and an air ambulance was also deployed. Videos circulating on social media show the car veering into a less crowded section of the street before stopping. Witnesses reported fans confronting the driver moments later.
Police Appeal for Calm
In an initial statement, police confirmed they responded to a road traffic collision just after 6 p.m. BST on Monday, May 26. They detained the male suspect at the scene and urged the public not to speculate about the motive while investigations continue.
“We can confirm the man arrested is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area,” police reiterated.
Liverpool FC and Officials Respond
Liverpool FC issued a statement expressing deep concern:
“Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident. We are in direct contact with Merseyside Police and will continue to support the emergency services.”
Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram told the BBC,
“There are still four people very, very ill in hospital. We are hoping they pull through.”
Prime Minister Keir Starmer also expressed sympathy, calling the scenes “appalling” and thanking first responders for their swift actions.
Football governing bodies including the Premier League and FIFA also issued messages of solidarity. FIFA President Gianni Infantino said:
“Football stands together with Liverpool FC and all fans of the club following the horrific incident.”
