Macarthur FC etched their name into history with a gritty 2-1 win over Wellington Phoenix at Sky Stadium, securing their first-ever victory on New Zealand soil. An early penalty from Valère Germain and a decisive late goal by substitute Dean Bosnjak sealed the deal for Macarthur, overshadowing Kosta Barbarouses’ milestone 98th A-League goal.

Phoenix’s Fortress No More

The defeat marked the first time since April 2023 that the Phoenix have suffered consecutive losses, leaving head coach Giancarlo Italiano questioning his team’s belief and commitment.

“It doesn’t feel good,” Italiano admitted post-match. “At home, you need to be strong. Last year, we prided ourselves on making this a fortress, but we’re not seeing that same mentality now.”

A Tale of Missed Chances and Key Moments

Macarthur drew first blood in the sixth minute when Isaac Hughes’ handball handed them a penalty. Though goalkeeper Josh Oluwayemi initially saved Germain’s attempt, the Frenchman pounced on the rebound to put his side ahead.

The Phoenix responded with a series of chances, most notably from Barbarouses and Marco Rojas, whose clever interplay finally paid off in the 44th minute. Barbarouses backheeled to Rojas, who danced through defenders before returning the ball for Barbarouses to smash home, leveling the score.

The second half saw both teams trade blows, with Wellington pushing for a lead. However, Macarthur’s clinical edge prevailed in the 75th minute as Marin Jakolis’ cutback found Bosnjak, who slotted the ball past Oluwayemi to restore the visitors’ lead.

Despite a late rally from the Phoenix, including long-range attempts and penalty appeals, Macarthur held firm to secure their first win in four games.

Rojas’ Return a Silver Lining

While the result was disappointing for Phoenix fans, Marco Rojas’ return to the starting lineup after 5048 days brought renewed energy to the team. His chemistry with Barbarouses provided a glimmer of hope for future matches.

“I thought Marco gave us a different dynamic,” Italiano said. “Now it’s just about getting him conditioned to play longer minutes.”
