The CommBank Matildas are on the cusp of potentially welcoming Melbourne Victory captain Kayla Morrison to their squad, pending FIFA’s approval of her eligibility. Interim head coach Tom Sermanni revealed that all necessary paperwork has been submitted, and the team is now awaiting FIFA’s decision.

The FIFA Hurdle

Morrison, an American-born defender, is pursuing a change in international allegiance to represent Australia. Despite her U.S. heritage, Morrison has never played for the United States, opening the door for this transition.

“We’re just waiting for FIFA,” Sermanni explained during a press briefing. “The paperwork is in; now, it’s a matter of waiting to see if it comes back positively.”

A Stellar A-Leagues Career

At 28, Morrison is a two-time A-League Women’s champion and a key figure for Melbourne Victory. She has been vocal about her aspirations to don the green and gold, making her case both on and off the field.

This season, Morrison has been an indispensable asset, starting in all three of Victory’s matches, including their commanding 4-1 victory over Western United. A standout performer in the 2023-24 season, Morrison earned A-Leagues All Star honors, scoring three goals across 23 appearances.

Unite Round Looms

Morrison’s current focus is with Victory, who are riding high in second place on the A-League standings, just one point behind Melbourne City. They are gearing up for a high-stakes clash against Central Coast Mariners during the Unite Round on November 23—a match that could define their season.

Looking Ahead

As 15 A-League stars join the Matildas for their upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Chinese Taipei, Morrison’s potential inclusion remains a hot topic. If cleared, she would join teammates Alex Chidiac and Emily Gielnik in bolstering Australia’s defensive lineup.

For now, the Matildas—and Morrison—wait in anticipation of FIFA’s verdict.
