AUCKLAND (June 11, 2024) — Auckland FC striker Max Mata has completed his loan spell with the Isuzu UTE A-League expansion side and will return to parent club Shrewsbury Town in England’s League Two. The 23-year-old Auckland native played a key role in the Black Knights’ historic Premiership-winning campaign, contributing two goals and three assists in 19 appearances before a hamstring injury cut short his Finals Series involvement.

A Season to Remember

Mata’s loan move to Auckland FC was a homecoming of sorts. Born and raised in Auckland, the striker embraced the opportunity to represent his hometown club in its inaugural A-League season. His partnership with fellow forward Myer Bevan and creative link-up play under head coach Steve Corica helped propel the Black Knights to the Premiership title.

However, Mata’s campaign ended on a bittersweet note. A hamstring injury ruled him out of Auckland’s two-legged Semi-Final defeat to Melbourne Victory, leaving him to watch from the sidelines as the club’s dream of a double slipped away.

Mata’s Emotional Farewell

In a heartfelt message shared via Auckland FC’s official channels, Mata expressed gratitude to the club’s supporters, staff, and teammates.

“It has been an incredible year in Auckland, one I’ll never forget,” Mata said. “Being from Auckland made this journey even more special. Lifting the Premiership Plate in front of our fans was a moment I’ll cherish forever.”

He added: “The support from The Port, the families, the kids, the staff, and my teammates has meant everything to me. Thank you for the memories—I’ll miss this club dearly.”

Corica’s Praise: ‘A Great Character’

Auckland FC head coach Steve Corica lauded Mata’s contributions, both on and off the pitch.

“Max is a great character and a talented player,” Corica said. “He formed a strong partnership with Myer [Bevan], created chances, and worked selflessly for the team. Shrewsbury is getting back a player with real potential, and we wish him all the best. He’ll always be welcome here.”

What’s Next for Mata?

With his loan spell concluded, Mata will rejoin Shrewsbury Town, where he remains under contract. The English club, known for nurturing young talent, will assess his fitness ahead of the 2024-25 League Two campaign.
