Victory Face Fitness Race Against Time Ahead of Derby Grand Final

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Melbourne Victory will make a last-minute decision on winger Nishan Velupillay’s Grand Final availability as the club battles multiple injury concerns ahead of Saturday’s blockbuster Melbourne Derby decider against City.

The 24-year-old Socceroo, seen in a moon boot and crutches earlier this week after sustaining an ankle injury in the semifinal against Auckland FC, remains “50-50” according to coach Arthur Diles.

“We’ll give him until the 11th hour,” Diles confirmed at Wednesday’s press conference at AAMI Park. “He’s walking better but playing in a final requires different intensity.”

Key Injury Concerns:

  1. Nishan Velupillay (Ankle)

    • 7 goals, 4 assists this season

    • Significant improvement in mobility

    • Final decision expected Friday

  2. Mitch Langerak (Foot)

    • First-choice goalkeeper (36 years old)

    • Missed both semifinal legs

    • “In much better position than anticipated”

  3. Defensive Duo

    • Jason Geria (calf) progressing well

    • Rai Marchán (foot) back in training

Tactical Implications:
Velupillay’s potential absence would force Diles to reconsider his attacking setup against City’s high press. The winger’s 1.7 key passes per game and ability to create width have been crucial to Victory’s transition game this season.

“These derbies often come down to moments,” Diles noted. “We need every weapon available.”

The club medical staff will conduct final fitness tests Friday morning before the team’s last training session. Victory are chasing their first championship since 2018 against their cross-town rivals.
