MILAN, Italy (AP) — AC Milan’s incoming coach Massimiliano Allegri has confirmed that captain and goalie Mike Maignan along with star forward Rafael Leão will remain at the club, dismissing speculation of summer exits as part of a strategic push to reclaim Serie A and Champions League prominence.

Maignan, 29, had drawn significant transfer interest from Chelsea via protracted talks, but Milan held firm on valuation and confirmed his role as captain will continue. Allegri described him as “one of the best goalkeepers in Europe,” stating: “I’m very happy he decided to stay.”

Portugal international Leão, 26, also received firm backing, with Allegri predicting “a great season.” Milan’s director added that no official offers had been received for the winger, and that the club sees him as integral to their project.

Allegri’s announcement comes amid broader squad changes: midfielder Tijjani Reijnders departed for Manchester City; Theo Hernández sealed a move to Al‑Hilal. But the decision to retain Maignan and Leão positions Milan to build a competitive core around leadership and elite quality.

Allegri also confirmed the high-profile arrival of Luka Modrić in August and emphasised that these strategic moves reflect Milan’s goal to return to Champions League positions by spring 2026.

📌 ANALYSIS & CONTEXT

  • Stability at the spine: Retaining Maignan and Leão ensures leadership in defence and attack, a vital platform for Allegri’s philosophy of unity and discipline.
  • Transfer calm: Despite Premier League and Bundesliga interest, Milan’s financial stance and player loyalty suggest a more patient, strategic recruitment approach.
  • Ambitions restored: With key contract commitments and Modrić’s impending arrival, Allegri is building a core with both experience and high-level pedigree.
