Historic trans-Tasman clash returns in September as New Zealand’s All Whites gear up for two-leg series, reigniting century-old rivalry.

AUCKLAND & CANBERRA (AP) — The long-established Soccer Ashes rivalry between New Zealand’s All Whites and Australia’s Socceroos is set to resume this September, with a two-match series scheduled in Canberra on Sept. 5 and in Auckland on Sept. 9.

The opening fixture will kick off at 9:45 p.m. NZT (7:45 p.m. local) at Canberra’s GIO Stadium. The second leg moves to Go Media Stadium in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) at 7 p.m. NZT. Tickets for the Auckland match were made available first to NZ Football’s Football Whānau members on June 25, with general sales starting June 27.

Reintroduced in 2023 after a 70-year hiatus, the Soccer Ashes trophy commemorates the rivalry dating back to 1923. The historic silver-plated razor case contains remnants of cigars smoked by captains George Campbell (NZ) and Alex Gibb (Australia), and is carved from rewarewa and Australian maple.

The All Whites arrive on the heels of a strong performance at Toronto’s Canadian Shield, finishing second and defeating Côte d’Ivoire—their highest-ranked scalp in over a decade. Head coach Darren Bazeley praised the contest as both “special” and ideal World Cup preparation, adding that playing at Go Media Stadium—home of Auckland FC—will thrill fans.
