SYDNEY — Sydney FC have locked in one of Australia’s most promising goalkeepers, with 19-year-old Gus Hoefsloot inking a three-year professional contract that sees him become the youngest player in club history to don the No.1 jersey.

The South Coast native, who has been with the Sky Blues Academy since the age of 12, is fresh off a breakout year in which he played a key role in the Young Socceroos’ historic AFC U-20 Asian Cup triumph.

“Signing my first professional contract with the club I’ve loved since I was a kid is honestly a dream come true,” said Hoefsloot. “To be following in the footsteps of my mentor Andrew Redmayne and wearing the number 1 jersey at 19 is a huge honour.”

Known for his composure, sharp reflexes and leadership beyond his years, Hoefsloot is expected to put immediate pressure on current first-choice keeper Harrison Devenish-Meares.

“I know the responsibility that comes with it, and I’m ready to step up,” Hoefsloot added. “I want to prove I’m ready to help this team win.”

Sydney FC Head Coach Ufuk Talay echoed the club’s belief in Hoefsloot’s potential.

“Gus is the best young goalkeeping prospect in the country,” Talay said. “He’s shown incredible poise and quality on the international stage and has been a standout in our system for years. He has the mentality to compete at the top level.”

Hoefsloot featured on the bench six times last season, including four appearances in the AFC Champions League 2. His rapid ascent through the club’s ranks has been watched closely by fans and analysts alike, with many tipping him as a future Socceroos mainstay.

With Sydney FC continuing their youth-focused strategy under Talay, Hoefsloot’s rise is emblematic of the club’s long-term vision — and the teenager seems ready to seize his moment.
