In a historic tribute to their achievements on and off the pitch, the City of Sydney awarded the Sydney FC Women’s team its highest civic honor today. Lord Mayor Clover Moore AO presented the team with the prestigious Key to the City during a ceremony at Town Hall, lauding their role in advancing women’s sports and inspiring future generations.

An Honor Rooted in Inspiration from Young Fans

The decision to bestow this accolade stemmed from heartfelt letters penned by two young fans, 12-year-olds Jennifer Nilsson-Poder and Lila Maywald, who urged the Lord Mayor to honor the team for their remarkable contributions to sport and society. Their words highlighted the profound impact Sydney FC Women’s success has had on young fans and aspiring athletes, which led Lord Mayor Moore to recognize the team’s role as champions not only in soccer but also in societal change.

“Your perseverance and success have contributed to the growth of women’s football, lighting the path for future generations of female athletes,” Lord Mayor Moore said. “This Key reflects Sydney’s pride in you, not only as champions of the game but as champions of change, empowering young women and girls to dream big.”

Sydney FC Women Embrace the Legacy of Leadership

Team Captain Natalie Tobin accepted the honor on behalf of Sydney FC Women, expressing gratitude and pride for the recognition.

“Receiving the Key to the City is an incredible honor for all of us in the Sydney FC family,” Tobin stated. “We are proud to represent this city and to inspire young girls like Jennifer and Lila to believe in their potential.”

The Key to the City symbolizes the team’s significant impact on gender equality and encouragement for young female athletes to pursue their dreams. This recognition, bestowed on only twelve other recipients in the past two decades, marks the first to be awarded to a sports organization in over three years.

Breaking Barriers for Future Stars

Sydney FC Chairman Scott Barlow reflected on the team’s influence, particularly its impact on the next generation of young female footballers.

“Sydney FC Women have broken records, set new standards, and inspired countless young girls to follow their passion for soccer,” Barlow noted. “Their impact reaches far beyond the field, setting the stage for future stars of Sydney FC and the Matildas.”

Jennifer and Lila, who inspired the award, were gifted signed Sydney FC jerseys and were invited to visit the club’s Sky Park training center, further strengthening the club’s commitment to its young fan base.
