Lee Padmore Resigns as Wellington Phoenix Academy Director

In a heartfelt decision underscored by family commitments, Lee Padmore has resigned as the Wellington Phoenix Academy Director. Citing a need to be closer to his family in Christchurch, Padmore will step down at the end of the year, ending a tenure that, though brief, has been transformative for the club’s academy and its partnership with New Zealand Football.

Padmore’s Impact on Phoenix’s Youth Development

Joining the club in February, Padmore has played a central role in managing eight age-group teams, fostering a high-performing environment at Fraser Park, and helping shape the Phoenix’s Talent Development Partnership with New Zealand Football. Phoenix Director of Football, Shaun Gill, praised Padmore’s leadership, calling him a “great leader” who cultivated a dynamic and supportive atmosphere.

Gill expressed mixed emotions over Padmore’s departure, stating, “I didn’t want to accept Lee’s resignation if I’m honest. He’s been an incredible leader and is loved by our staff and academy teams.” Understanding the challenges of balancing professional demands with family obligations, Gill conveyed his best wishes to Padmore, acknowledging the difficulty of the decision.

A Family-First Decision

For Padmore, the decision came down to family. Reflecting on the choice, he shared, “I’m leaving one of the top football jobs in the country, but ultimately, family is the single most important thing to me. This is very much a family decision, and because of that, I won’t regret it.”

Padmore expressed gratitude for the relationships he built with staff, players, and parents, saying, “The people here are unbelievable. The club has grown so much since I first joined, and the caliber of people here makes it a truly special place.” Though he is stepping back from a central role, he hopes to stay involved in some capacity, remaining invested in the club’s mission to develop homegrown talent and bolster New Zealand’s soccer ambitions on the international stage.

The Phoenix organization is now focused on securing Padmore’s successor, aiming to appoint a new director before the 2025 academy season. The search will target someone who can continue the Academy’s momentum, fostering young talent to support both the A-League and New Zealand’s soccer goals.
