Wellington Phoenix Lock in Corban Piper With New Two-Year Contract

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — Wellington Phoenix have secured the services of breakout defender Corban Piper, re-signing the 22-year-old to a new two-year contract following an impressive debut campaign in the Isuzu UTE A-League.
Piper, who originally joined the Phoenix on a scholarship deal late in the 2023 pre-season, has won the hearts of the club’s supporters with his relentless energy, adaptability, and fearless performances.
An integral figure in Birkenhead United’s Northern League squad prior to turning professional, Piper has showcased his versatility this season by featuring across multiple positions, including fullback, center back, midfield, wing, and even striker.
Despite his defensive duties, Piper has found the back of the net three times in 21 appearances, second only to All Whites veteran Kosta Barbarouses in goals for Wellington this season.
Head coach Giancarlo Italiano praised Piper’s commitment and determination, crediting the young star’s character for his rapid rise.
“Corbs has an incredible attitude, and I think that’s what’s endeared him to the fans,” Italiano said. “He gives 110% every day at training and in matches. If I had 11 players with Corbs’ mentality, we wouldn’t lose many games.
“The exciting thing is he has so much room to grow. I’m looking forward to watching his development firsthand over the next two years.”
Piper, speaking after penning his new deal, expressed gratitude for the opportunity and excitement about the road ahead.
“The Phoenix gave me my first taste of professional football, and I’ve enjoyed my time here,” he said. “I got my chance to play through the team’s injuries this season, and I guess I took it quite well.
“I can’t wait for the next two years. Over the upcoming seasons, I want to develop myself technically and hopefully become the polished player that Chiefy [Italiano] wants me to be.”
The utility man has also become a fan favorite for his wholehearted style of play and is determined to keep that connection strong.
“I love the fans and love playing for them,” Piper said. “I like to give 100% and put in big tackles. When I watch football, I love seeing players get stuck in and give it their all — that’s what I try to bring to the field.
“It means a lot when I see the fans backing me. It’s a huge confidence boost and pushes me to perform even better week after week.”
Asked about his best position, Piper shrugged off the question with trademark humility.
“As long as I’m on the field, I’m happy,” he said. “It’s not really up to me where I play — that’s up to Chiefy.”
