Wellington Phoenix Sign Dominican Republic Captain Lucía León for 2025-26 A-League Women
WELLINGTON, New Zealand — The Wellington Phoenix women’s squad has secured its first major signing for the 2025-26 Liberty A-League season, adding Dominican Republic international captain Lucía León to their defensive ranks.
The 27-year-old wingback joins from Adelaide United, where she impressed during the 2024-25 campaign. León brings top-flight experience from England’s Women’s Super League (Tottenham Hotspur, Watford) and Spain’s Liga F (Real Betis), making her one of the most credentialed players in the Phoenix squad.
Interim head coach Amy Shepherd praised León’s multidimensional game: “Lucía’s 1v1 defending and attacking output make her the complete modern fullback. Her leadership as national team captain will be invaluable in our locker room.”
León described her move to Wellington as “spontaneous,” citing the A-League’s growing reputation: “It’s a well-organized competition that keeps improving. When the Phoenix opportunity came, staying in the league felt right.”
The attacking-minded defender promises an entertaining style: “I’m aggressive going forward – my game is about creating excitement. As a wingback, I’ll use my freedom to attack strategically.”
León recalls being impressed by Phoenix supporters during last season’s match at Porirua Park: “The Yellow Fever were intimidatingly loud – now I can’t wait to have that energy behind us.”
The signing marks the 10th contracted player for Phoenix’s women’s side, with negotiations ongoing with other free agents. León’s arrival signals Wellington’s ambition to improve on their sixth-place finish last season.
