The Wellington Phoenix women’s team delivered a standout performance on Sunday, defeating two-time Ninja A-League champions Sydney FC 2-0 at Porirua Park. This victory marks a club-record fourth consecutive match without a loss, propelling the Phoenix into fourth place on the ladder. Meanwhile, Sydney FC’s struggles continue as they languish at the bottom of the table.

Head coach Paul Temple described the win as a pivotal moment for the team. “These results are what we need to take that next step as a team,” Temple said. “Beating Sydney, a team with serial winners and quality players, is a big step forward for us.”

Milestone Goals Seal Victory

Second-half goals from Grace Jale and Zoe McMeeken secured the three points for the Phoenix. Jale’s strike, her first of the season, was a thunderous 30-yard shot that left Sydney’s goalkeeper Tahlia Franco with no chance. McMeeken’s 88th-minute header, her maiden A-League goal, solidified the win.

Jale’s goal came after a well-orchestrated one-two with substitute Alyssa Whinham, who brought fresh energy to the Phoenix’s attack in the second half. “The second half was brilliant and much more like what we wanted to be,” Temple said, praising his team’s response after a subpar first half.

 Thunderstorms and Tactical Shifts

The match was delayed for 45 minutes as a thunderstorm struck just before halftime. Temple viewed the break as an opportunity to recalibrate. “We weren’t at the races in the first half,” he admitted. “The delay allowed us to reset, analyze our performance, and come out stronger in the second half.”

Despite the challenging weather conditions, the Phoenix’s defense, led by Lara Wall and Mackenzie Barry, held firm against Sydney’s early attacks. Sydney’s Millie Farrow, the most persistent threat, failed to capitalize on key opportunities, including a poorly executed back-pass interception.

Match Highlights:

  • First Half: Both teams battled to gain an edge, with Sydney’s Millie Farrow testing the Phoenix’s defense. Wellington’s Emma Main had the game’s first shot, but neither side found the back of the net before the storm-induced delay.
  • Second Half: The Phoenix emerged revitalized, with Jale breaking the deadlock in the 59th minute. McMeeken’s late header sealed the deal, ensuring a memorable night for the home side.

Post-Match Reactions:

Sydney FC’s captain, Nat Tobin, acknowledged her team’s struggles. “We had the chances but couldn’t put them away,” she said. “It’s disappointing, but we’re determined to bounce back. This is a new challenge for us.”

Wellington’s win underscores their growing confidence and tactical discipline under Temple’s leadership. With this momentum, the Phoenix look poised to make a strong push for the top.
