A New Era for Youth Futsal in New Zealand
The Youth Futsal Championship 2024 kicks off this Saturday at the Ākau Tangi Sports Centre in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Wellington. For the first time, Wellington Phoenix will participate, marking their inaugural entry into futsal.
Championship Overview
Running from Saturday, 7 December, to Tuesday, 10 December, the tournament features six simultaneous competitions: Boys U-19, U-17, U-15, and Girls U-19, U-17, U-15. This premier event will see 36 teams from across the country converge to compete for national titles.
Wellington Phoenix’s Debut
Wellington Phoenix will field teams in three categories: Boys U-17, Boys U-15, and Girls U-15. Their participation follows a stellar year in age-group football, where both their boys’ and girls’ teams triumphed in the Youth National League. The Phoenix will aim to replicate their success on the futsal court.
A Nationwide Showcase
The tournament promises intense competition, with games from all six categories. Select matches will be broadcast live and free on the New Zealand Football YouTube channel, bringing the excitement to fans nationwide.
Defending Champions
The 2023 Youth Futsal Championship saw Waikato Rapids dominate, claiming titles in Boys U-17, U-15, and Girls U-15. Other champions included Central Futsal (Boys U-19), Capital Futsal (Girls U-19), and Auckland City (Girls U-17). This year’s tournament will determine if these teams can defend their crowns or if new champions will emerge.
