Midfielder’s standout performance inspires Sky Blues to thrilling victory

Anas Ouahim emerged as the standout figure in Sydney FC’s 4-2 triumph over Western Sydney Wanderers in the Sydney Derby. Introduced at halftime with the score tied 1-1, Ouahim quickly stamped his authority on the game, showcasing his playmaking ability and clinical finishing in one of the A-League’s marquee matchups.

A Turnaround Sparked by Ouahim’s Brilliance

Brought on as a substitute, the German-born Moroccan wasted no time making an impact. Just three minutes into the second half, he delivered a precise free-kick assist for Jordan Courtney-Perkins’ header to put Sydney in front. Moments later, Ouahim converted a penalty with composure, scoring his first league goal of the season to establish a commanding lead for the Sky Blues.

While he didn’t earn an official assist for the team’s fourth goal, Ouahim’s creativity was undeniable. A powerful run through the Wanderers’ midfield culminated in a perfect through-ball for Patryk Klimala, who sealed Sydney’s victory in the Unite Round clash.

A Bench Start and a Message Delivered

Despite his dazzling display, Ouahim began the match on the bench—a decision by head coach Ufuk Talay that raised eyebrows. Talay later addressed this, emphasizing the importance of maintaining professionalism.

“It’s important that when players aren’t starting, they don’t bring a sad face,” Talay said. “Anas was disappointed, yes, but he showed me on the pitch why he should be playing.”

Ouahim echoed his coach’s sentiments but downplayed the idea that his performance was fueled by frustration.
“I always give 100%, whether I start or come on as a substitute,” he said. “Of course, I was frustrated not to start—I think every player feels that way—but you have to be professional. When you step on the pitch, you give everything.”

Adapting to New Surroundings

Ouahim, a summer signing from the Dutch Eredivisie, has featured in all five of Sydney FC’s matches this season, playing in an advanced midfield role. Despite his contributions, he believes fans have yet to see his full potential.

“I haven’t shown everything yet,” the 27-year-old admitted. “It takes time to adapt—to get to know your teammates, the league, and the culture when you’re far from home. But I’m confident there’s more to come.”

Ouahim also highlighted the statistical nature of football, acknowledging that goals and assists often overshadow other aspects of a player’s game.
“People notice when you score or assist, but there have been good games where I didn’t register in the stats. I know there’s another level I can reach.”

Building Confidence Through a Rivals’ Triumph

Sydney’s victory over their fierce rivals moved them to sixth on the A-League table, with three wins and two losses. Ouahim believes the nature of their derby win could serve as a turning point for the club’s campaign.
“To win a derby is always special—you feel it in the crowd and in the stadium,” he said. “This kind of win gives us energy and confidence to build on, even as we recognize there’s room for improvement.”

With a performance like this in the books, the Sky Blues and their supporters will hope Ouahim’s star continues to rise as the season unfolds.
