Anthony Caceres Shines on Socceroos Debut at 32

Sydney FC midfielder Anthony Caceres marked a defining moment in his career, earning his long-awaited debut for the Subway Socceroos at the age of 32. The lsuzu UTE A-League stalwart came on in the 74th minute of Australia’s 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia in their 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup qualifier.

“It sunk in the second I stepped onto that field,” Caceres reflected. “It was a very special moment, looking into the stands and seeing my family there with the Australia kit on. It’s immediately become the highlight of my career.”

 Long Road to National Recognition

Despite being a two-time A-Leagues champion, Caceres had never represented Australia at any level before stepping onto the pitch at AAMI Park on November 14. Now, under the guidance of new Socceroos coach Tony Popovic, he’s determined to stay in the squad.

“I’m familiar with a lot of people here. It’s a serious environment, but a welcoming one,” said Caceres. “Even in my 30s, I believe this experience will provoke growth in me. It’s going to test my level, but I’m confident I can deliver when called upon.”

Caceres credited his consistency and development over the years for earning him the call-up. He also praised Sydney FC teammate Douglas Costa for inspiring him to reach this milestone.

“Douglas and I had conversations about our ambitions, and he encouraged me to aim for the national team. He’s been instrumental in helping me achieve this level,” Caceres revealed.

Looking Ahead: Bahrain Rematch and A-Leagues Unite Round

The Socceroos are gearing up for a pivotal rematch against Bahrain after their 1-0 defeat to the world No. 76 in October. Caceres, who watched that game from home, shared his thoughts on the upcoming challenge.

“I think we need to play with bravery, freedom, and belief in our ability,” he said. “Structurally, we have the tools to make it difficult for them to threaten our goal. If we stay connected and creative, we can create chances and capitalize on them.”

Meanwhile, Sydney FC is preparing for a blockbuster derby against Western Sydney Wanderers during the A-Leagues Unite Round, a marquee event showcasing the league’s finest talent.

For Caceres, the focus remains on maintaining his form and understanding Popovic’s vision for the Socceroos. “It’s about improving, understanding the coach’s demands, and bringing something new to the team. I feel confident I can offer solutions and help the squad thrive.”
