New Zealand captain sees Wembley hopes dashed despite valiant effort

LONDON — Chris Wood’s hopes of reaching the FA Cup final were dashed as Manchester City proved too strong for Nottingham Forest, winning 2-0 in their semifinal clash at Wembley Stadium.

Facing the reigning English champions, Forest’s challenge grew steeper almost immediately when City’s Rico Lewis opened the scoring in just the second minute. Josko Gvardiol added a second shortly after halftime, giving Manchester City full control of the contest.

Despite the early setbacks, Forest mounted a determined response, striking the woodwork three times as they searched for a way back into the match. However, Pep Guardiola’s men held firm defensively, refusing to yield even as Forest increased the pressure in the second half.

Wood, the All Whites captain, started the match but was substituted in the 71st minute as Forest pushed for a late breakthrough.

The semifinal defeat ends a spirited FA Cup run for Forest and for Wood, whose leadership had been key to the club’s deep push into the tournament. Manchester City now advance to face Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final on Sunday, May 18 (NZT).

The match was played on Monday, April 28, 2025 (NZT).

Final Score:
Nottingham Forest 0
Manchester City 2 (Rico Lewis 2′, Josko Gvardiol 51′)
