Matildas Star Prioritises Wellbeing Amid Strain of Rising Fame

A Personal Decision: Vine Withdraws from Upcoming International Fixtures

Matildas winger Cortnee Vine has announced a temporary break from football to focus on her mental health, following a whirlwind rise to prominence over the past two years. The 26-year-old, who played a pivotal role in the Matildas’ success during the Women’s World Cup, has once again made herself unavailable for selection in Australia’s squad for upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Taiwan.

In a statement released through her management, Vine candidly addressed the challenges of her newfound fame, acknowledging the toll it has taken on her wellbeing.

Rising Stardom and Its Challenges

Vine’s meteoric rise began with her stellar performances in the A-League Women, but it was her unforgettable winning penalty against France during the World Cup quarter-finals on home soil that catapulted her into national hero status. Her decision to stay with Sydney FC after the World Cup, despite overseas interest, made her one of the faces of Australian football.

In June, she moved to the National Women’s Soccer League, signing with North Carolina Courage, where she has since made five appearances and scored one goal.

However, the intense spotlight and demanding schedule have taken a personal toll. In her statement, Vine reflected on the difficulty of balancing her mental health amid the pressures of professional football.

“My life has dramatically changed over the past two years,” Vine said. “Due to these very new and sometimes overwhelming experiences, I’ve discovered that identifying, managing, and prioritising my mental health has become something I have needed to work very hard on.”

Taking a Break for Growth

For the second consecutive international window, Vine has opted out of the Matildas squad. Interim coach Tom Sermanni confirmed her absence, stating that he had been in regular contact with the winger.

“She’s good, but she’s just not available for these upcoming games,” Sermanni said.

Despite her absence, Vine remains confident in her decision and believes the time away will allow her to return stronger and more balanced

“Like many who face mental health challenges, I have my good days and my difficult ones, but every day is a lesson in learning to find the right balance,” Vine said. “I truly appreciate everyone’s support and concern, and I’m confident I’ll return stronger than ever.”

Looking Ahead

Although Vine has not provided a timeline for her return, her decision underscores the growing importance of mental health in professional sports. As she takes time to recalibrate, fans and teammates alike have expressed their support, trusting she will come back even stronger when the time is right.
