The Japanese international, a veteran of three FIFA World Cups and two Olympic Games, brings an impressive wealth of experience to Auckland FC. Having played at the highest level of European football, Sakai steps into his new leadership role as the club embarks on its inaugural A-League season.

Sakai will be backed by a solid leadership group. Jake Brimmer and Tommy Smith have been named vice-captains, each bringing their own extensive experience. Brimmer joined the squad from Melbourne Victory, where he claimed the Johnny Warren Medal for the 2021-22 season. Meanwhile, Smith, a veteran of 53 caps for the New Zealand All Whites, has also made 247 appearances for Ipswich Town in the English Premier League.

Sakai expressed his excitement about the new role, saying:

“I understand the responsibility and pride that comes with being captain of this team. I’m excited to lead Auckland FC and work with such a talented and committed squad, including Jake and Tommy, who will play crucial roles in guiding us through the season. Together, we’re ready to take on the challenges ahead and make our supporters proud.”

Auckland FC will make their competitive debut this Saturday, October 19, when they face Brisbane Roar at Go Media Mt. Smart Stadium. The game marks a historic moment for the club and its fans.
