Joe Champness’ Journey with Auckland FC Comes to an End

In a surprising development, Auckland FC has announced the departure of midfielder Joe Champness by what the club describes as “mutual consent.” The announcement comes just eight games into Auckland FC’s inaugural A-League season, with the 27-year-old yet to make a competitive appearance.

In a brief statement on the club’s official website, Auckland FC acknowledged Champness’ contributions to the team during its formative stages.

“Auckland FC would like to express its thanks to Joe for being part of the early foundations of the club and his contribution to date. The club would like to wish Joe all the best for the future in both his football and personal endeavours,” the statement read.

A Peripatetic Career: Champness’ Journey So Far

Despite being just 27, Joe Champness has already had a dynamic professional career, spanning seven clubs across Australia, Turkey, and New Zealand. His career has been marked by both footballing exploits and a notable interlude in the music industry.

Champness first stepped away from football in 2019, while under contract with the Newcastle Jets, to pursue a music career in Los Angeles. While he initially expressed intent to return to Newcastle if he resumed playing, he instead signed with Brisbane Roar on a loan deal.

Subsequent moves included a stint with Turkish Super Lig side Giresunspor, where he signed a three-year deal. However, after only 13 games, Champness terminated his contract over unpaid wages. FIFA later ruled in his favor, awarding him $1.33 million in compensation following a dispute resolution claim.

At the international level, Champness represented Australia as a youth before switching allegiance to New Zealand in 2021. Since then, he has appeared for the All Whites in several matches, bolstering his connection to his home country.

Auckland FC’s Recruitment Challenges

Champness’ departure leaves Auckland FC facing critical decisions as the January transfer window approaches. The club is already dealing with injuries to key players, including defender Dan Hall and midfielder Cameron Howieson.

Head coach Steve Corica recently hinted at potential signings, though he emphasized that any recruitment would be measured and strategic.

“We want, obviously, to make sure it’s the right move if we’re going to do it. Recruitment doesn’t happen in one day; it takes time to make sure we get the right players,” Corica said.

Under A-League rules, Auckland FC can only sign Australian or New Zealand players for the current season, as their overseas player slots are fully occupied.

Despite the challenges, Auckland FC continues to lead the league table, remaining one point clear at the top, even after last weekend’s 4-0 defeat to Western United.
