Academy Star Becomes Sixth Graduate to Join First Team in 2024

Kavian Rahmani has officially become the latest Melbourne City Academy graduate to sign a first-team contract, committing to a three-year deal with the option of a two-year extension. This promising midfielder’s journey from youth development to professional football is the latest success story from the City Academy, which has produced five other first-team players in the past six months.

Rahmani’s impressive form during the 2024 VPL1 season, where he scored seven goals and contributed eight assists, solidified his place as a rising talent. The 17-year-old is now set to embark on his professional career, with his contract set to begin on July 1, 2025.

From Development Squad to Professional Contract

Rahmani’s Rapid Rise Through City’s Academy System

Joining Melbourne City’s development squad in 2019, Rahmani quickly made his mark within the Academy. He became an official member of the squad ahead of the 2020 season, and his talent blossomed, especially over the past year. His standout performances in 2024, both with the U21 team and the Senior VPL1 squad, highlighted his growth as a player.

A turning point in Rahmani’s development came during the Academy’s pre-season trip to Italy, where he further honed his skills. That experience paved the way for his smooth transition into senior football, and his dedication has now been rewarded with a professional contract.

Melbourne City FC Senior Academy Manager, Simon Zappia, reflected on Rahmani’s journey and resilience:
“Kavian’s potential was clear from a young age, despite being a late developer physically and facing long-term injuries. He showed incredible perseverance, and it’s rewarding to see him earn this opportunity.”

Rahmani’s Future with Melbourne City

Club Leaders Excited About His Potential

Melbourne City FC Director of Football, Michael Petrillo, emphasized the club’s excitement about Rahmani’s future:
“Kavian has shown immense character, overcoming significant challenges during his time with us. His technical ability and decision-making in the final third of the pitch really set him apart.”

Rahmani himself expressed his gratitude and excitement upon signing the contract, sharing how meaningful the achievement was:
“Signing a first-team contract with Melbourne City has always been my dream. The support from the club and staff has been incredible, and I’m eager to contribute to the team’s future success.”
