Mariners Secure a Point but Face Pressing Challenges

Despite a hard-earned point in their away match against Adelaide United on Saturday, Central Coast Mariners’ head coach, Mark Jackson, was clear in his message to the squad: the team must raise their game if they aim to stay competitive in the A-League.

In a challenging match at Coopers Stadium, Sabit Ngor’s second-half equalizer salvaged the draw. However, Jackson remains unsatisfied with the Mariners’ performance, particularly their first-half showing, which he described as “terrible.”

“It was a terrible first half from us and a slight improvement in the second half, but still not up to our standards,” Jackson said post-match.

Jackson on Team Adjustments and Defensive Strategies

In a bid to improve momentum, Jackson introduced fresh legs at halftime, adjusting the formation and shifting players in an attempt to control the game. The strategic changes, including Nathan Paull’s introduction to form a defensive trio with Bradley Tapp and Brian Kaltak, helped stabilize the Mariners’ defense. Paull contributed significantly, executing seven defensive actions and completing 93% of his passes, a critical effort in securing the draw.

Another notable impact came from new recruit Vitor Feijao, who came off the bench in the 60th minute. Feijao’s bold play led to Ngor’s crucial equalizer, helping tilt momentum in Mariners’ favor.

“We felt Adelaide were playing through us, so we tweaked it to cut off the middle and force them outside, which helped,” Jackson explained. “We want to win football matches, not just hold on.”

Reflecting on a previous match against Shanghai, Jackson acknowledged the team’s strong defensive showing there but noted that Saturday’s first-half effort fell short.

“There were pleasing elements in the second half,” Jackson added. “We adapted our shape and stayed aggressive, which is essential in games like these.”

Focus on Midfield Grit and McCalmont’s Role

In midfield, Alfie McCalmont stood out with a robust performance. Winning more duels (6) than any other Mariners player and contributing to three tackles, McCalmont exemplified the type of grit Jackson seeks from the squad. Yet, Jackson emphasized that even seasoned players like McCalmont have “levels to go,” highlighting his commitment to ongoing development.

“[Alfie] is a good player; I worked with him for a long time and know what talent he’s got,” Jackson said. “But he, like the rest of the team, has levels to go, and we’ll continue to push to develop these players.”

With a full week of preparation before their upcoming A-League fixture against Perth Glory, Jackson and the team aim to build on this point while staying focused on their season goals.
