Aotearoa’s young football stars aim to make history in the Dominican Republic

Fresh off their triumph at the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship, which earned them a spot in the 2025 tournament, New Zealand’s U-17 women’s team is now gearing up for their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup opener in the Dominican Republic. The Kiwi squad, known for their strong performances in youth competitions, will face a formidable challenge in their first match against Nigeria, the reigning bronze medallists.

New Zealand has a notable history in this tournament, with their best finish being third place in 2018. The team, coached by Alana Gunn, is looking to replicate and possibly exceed that success. Gunn has assembled a strong squad of 21 players, 13 of whom played pivotal roles in their recent OFC U-16 Championship victory. Among them is standout striker Laura Bennett, who finished as the top scorer in that tournament.

Captain Alyssha Eglinton expressed her confidence in the team ahead of their World Cup campaign. Speaking to FIFA.com, she highlighted the unity and preparedness of the squad:

“As a team, we’ve really come together over the past 10 days and the past year. We’re feeling super ready and confident in our abilities. Our main goal is to advance beyond the group stage and showcase a playing style we can be proud of. We’re excited to develop our team identity and grow throughout the tournament.”

Nigeria, New Zealand’s opening opponent, will pose a significant threat. The African side impressed during the 2022 edition, narrowly missing out on a final appearance after a dramatic penalty shootout. In the same tournament, they handed New Zealand a tough 4-0 defeat in the group stage.

The Nigerian squad is led by forward Harmony Chidi, who has been a standout performer, netting 12 goals in just six qualifying matches. Inspired by Nigerian football star Victor Osimhen, Chidi will be the player to watch as Nigeria seeks to dominate Group B.

New Zealand’s opening match against Nigeria kicks off at 9 AM NZT on Thursday, 17 October, and will be broadcast live on FIFA+, giving fans a chance to see the Kiwis in action as they look to make their mark on the global stage.
