Sydney FC took a giant leap toward the AFC Champions League Two semi-finals with a commanding 2-0 victory over Jeonbuk in South Korea, thanks to a brilliant brace from Patryk Klimala. The win puts Ufuk Talay’s side in pole position to progress, extending their impressive run in Asian competition.

Talay Praises Team Performance

Speaking after the match, Sydney FC head coach Ufuk Talay was full of praise for his side’s disciplined display.

“Overall, I thought we played well against a strong team. We managed possession effectively and defended resolutely when needed,” said Talay.

“It’s never easy to win away against a team like Jeonbuk, so securing a 2-0 result is very pleasing. But we won’t be complacent—Jeonbuk remains a quality side, and a two-goal lead can be dangerous if we concede.”

Klimala’s Heroics Secure the Win

Striker Patryk Klimala, who delivered both goals on the night, echoed his coach’s sentiments.

“We executed our game plan perfectly. The key was maintaining our pressing intensity after scoring—we didn’t allow Jeonbuk to settle,” said Klimala.

In cold conditions hovering around five degrees, Sydney FC absorbed early pressure before striking in the 36th minute. Klimala exploited Jeonbuk’s defensive frailties, finding the net after relentless pressing. Just minutes later, he forced two excellent saves from the goalkeeper, keeping the hosts on the back foot.

Despite Jeonbuk’s attempts to level the score, Sydney’s defense held firm, with goalkeeper Harrison Devenish-Meares producing a crucial save to deny Andrea Compagno before halftime. The Italian striker came close again early in the second half, his header grazing the crossbar.

Sydney FC struck again in the 58th minute, with midfielder Leo Sena picking out Klimala, who unleashed a powerful low strike into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Jeonbuk had a penalty appeal waved away in the 69th minute, and despite late pressure, Sydney FC stood strong to take a crucial advantage back to Australia for next week’s second leg.

With a place in the semi-finals within reach, the Sky Blues will now aim to finish the job on home soil.
