Leichhardt Oval’s Surface Under Fire After Sky Blues’ Victory

Sydney FC Chief Executive Officer Mark Aubrey has issued a strong warning regarding the future of the club’s A-League Women’s matches at Leichhardt Oval, citing the deteriorating condition of the pitch.

The Sky Blues recently edged past Western Sydney Wanderers 1-0 at the iconic ground, but the victory was overshadowed by growing concerns over the playing surface. The subpar field quality has already led the Australian Professional Leagues (APL) to relocate this weekend’s A-League Women’s Unite Round to Jubilee Stadium in Kogarah.

Aubrey, expressing frustration over the state of the pitch, revealed that Sydney FC is contemplating alternative venues for their home fixtures if significant improvements aren’t made.

“We are considering our options for the remaining home games this season after the decision to move the A-League Women’s Unite Round from Leichhardt Oval,” said Aubrey.

While acknowledging the venue’s unique atmosphere and the club’s desire to establish a home base for the Women’s team at Leichhardt, Aubrey was clear about the challenges posed by the surface.

“The playing surface is currently unacceptable for professional football, especially considering we are just three rounds into the new season,” he stated. “If there’s no substantial improvement, we will have no choice but to seek alternative arrangements. If those alternatives work well, it raises the question of whether we return at all.”

Sydney FC will monitor the condition of Leichhardt Oval closely, with no immediate home games scheduled. Their next home fixture is set for Sunday, December 15, against the Newcastle Jets.

Unite Round Shifts to Jubilee Stadium

In the meantime, this weekend’s women’s clash against Melbourne City will take place at Jubilee Stadium, kicking off at 4:15 PM on Sunday. The decision to move underscores the urgency of addressing the turf issues at Leichhardt Oval.
