There’s a new commander at the helm of the US men’s national team, and the excitement surrounding the program is palpable as they gear up for their first match under his leadership. Mauricio Pochettino’s arrival has injected a fresh intensity into the squad, especially in preparation for Saturday’s friendly against Panama at Q2 Stadium.

Intensity has become the defining theme during the team’s week-long training camp at Austin FC’s St. David’s Performance Center, as several USMNT players voiced their enthusiasm. “One thing we’ve really focused on is the intensity of our play,” said Leeds United midfielder Brenden Aaronson. “We want to play at a high intensity, control possession, and play in the opponent’s half. The goal is to be a confident team, and that’s exactly what we’re aiming for.”

Striker Josh Sargent echoed Aaronson’s sentiments, stating, “Whether we have the ball or not, the focus is on being intense. If we lose possession, we aim to recover it immediately. That message has been clear from the start.”

Tim Ream, a veteran center back, shared insights from his experience during training, revealing, “We were out on the field for two hours today, which is probably the longest session I’ve had in my 14 years with the national team.” Ricardo Pepi added, “The training has a purpose, whether it’s warm-ups or pre-activation. Everything is designed to enhance our performance on the pitch. It’s been great to train with this level of intensity.”

Building a Winner

In his first Matchday-1 press conference, Pochettino radiated enthusiasm, highlighting the joy he and his staff have found during their initial week with the team. He emphasized his commitment to competing and winning, although he acknowledged that the team is still in the process of getting acquainted.

“We are so happy to be here; Austin is an incredible place to play soccer. Tomorrow, we will share a fantastic moment together,” Pochettino stated. “The challenge is to build a cohesive team, to understand one another, and to prepare for upcoming competitions like the Nations League and Gold Cup. Winning is our priority, but our immediate goal is to establish a foundation for the future.”

Pochettino displayed a pragmatic approach to his new role, recognizing the limitations of making substantial progress in just over a week. Nevertheless, he is determined to establish clear expectations under his leadership.

MLS Talent Welcome

Pochettino has made it clear that talent from Major League Soccer (MLS) is welcome in the national team setup. “I don’t believe that being an elite player requires you to be in Europe,” he remarked in a Spanish-language interview. “We see players like Messi excelling in MLS, which demonstrates that the league is competitive. Players competing in MLS can showcase their talent at the national level.”

This message resonates with the player pool. Tim Ream emphasized the importance of understanding players as individuals, saying, “When a coach comes in, they must consider players as people. It’s about managing travel, minutes played, and the dynamics of our group to create a cohesive unit. The manager’s job is to get the best out of every player, regardless of their league.”

The Road Ahead

The USMNT’s new journey begins against Panama, the team that disrupted Gregg Berhalter’s tenure in the group stage of the 2024 Copa América. Pochettino clarified that while revenge is not a primary focus, the players are eager to make a positive impact in this new era.

Known for his attack-minded philosophy, Pochettino envisions a USMNT that is assertive and ball-dominant. However, he is also committed to blending style with the tenacity required for success. “Winning is always the priority in soccer, and we must be smart about it,” he stated. “If we can’t play out from the back, we’ll find alternative solutions. It’s crucial to keep our players comfortable on the pitch to maintain their confidence.”

Pochettino’s vision embodies the challenges ahead and the drive to create a competitive team capable of success on the global stage. As the squad prepares for their first test under his guidance, anticipation builds for what this new chapter will bring.
