Wellington Phoenix is gearing up for a pivotal clash in Round 7 of the Ninja A-League as they host defending champions Sydney FC at Porirua Park. Riding the momentum of three unbeaten games, the Phoenix aim to extend their streak against a Sydney side grappling with a slow start to the season.

Head coach Paul Temple credits the team’s exceptional fitness as a key factor behind their recent success.

Coach Temple: “We Want to Be the Fittest Team in the League”

Reflecting on their high-energy performances, Temple highlighted the squad’s resilience and work ethic:

“I think it was evident against the Victory last Friday. Our fitness really shone, especially in the final 15 minutes. The girls have been working incredibly hard to ensure we’re the fittest team in the league.”

The team’s fitness journey has been driven by strength and conditioning coach Kieran McMinn, whose rigorous preseason regimen has translated into improved endurance and match intensity.

“We’ve raised the intensity in training, and it’s paying off,” Temple noted. “Fitness is something we can control, and it allows us to press more effectively and maintain energy throughout games.”

Squad Depth Creates Selection “Headaches”

The team’s strong form has also sparked competitive debates within the coaching staff over the starting lineup.

“It’s a good problem to have,” Temple admitted. “Our flexibility and ability to adapt tactically are strengths. This gives us the edge we need to tailor our approach to specific opponents, including Sydney FC.”

Sydney FC: Struggling Champions Still Pose a Threat

Sydney FC, the reigning champions, currently sit eleventh on the league table, enduring an uncharacteristically sluggish start. Despite their struggles, Temple is cautious about underestimating them.

“They’re still Sydney FC,” Temple said. “They deserve respect. They’ve got a roster of experienced players who know how to win. While their form won’t stay this way forever, we’re in a position to capitalize and push for a result.”

Midfield Reinforcement: Amelia Abbott Joins the Squad

Adding to the excitement, the Phoenix have welcomed midfielder Amelia Abbott from the University of Texas. Though her debut won’t come this weekend, Temple expressed enthusiasm about her potential impact.

“She’s a versatile player who fits our tactical style perfectly,” Temple said. “She knows many of the girls already, which makes her integration seamless. We’re thrilled to have her on board.”
