Fundraiser Launched for Former Footballer’s Life-Saving Surgery Amid Rare Disorder Battle

TAURANGA, New Zealand — Rachel Weatherley, a 22-year-old former footballer who played for Bay of Plenty clubs Tauranga Moana, Whakatane Town, and Otumoetai, is fighting for her life against a rare and debilitating condition. Her family has launched a $150,000 fundraising campaign to cover life-changing surgery after she was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and related vascular complications.

A Promising Career Cut Short
Once an active athlete, Weatherley’s life took a drastic turn three years ago when she began experiencing severe, unexplained pain. Doctors later diagnosed her with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a genetic disorder that weakens connective tissues, as well as Abdominal Vascular Compression Syndromes (AVCS), which disrupt blood flow and make eating unbearable.

“She depends on a feeding tube to survive,” her family wrote on their Givealittle fundraiser page“Her body has been slowly starving. Most days, she’s bedridden from exhaustion, nausea, and relentless pain.”

No Treatment Available in New Zealand
With no effective treatment options locally, Weatherley requires specialized decompression surgery overseas, followed by extensive post-op care. The $150,000 goal will cover medical costs, travel, accommodations, and ongoing therapies. So far, over $14,000 has been raised.

A Community’s Rallying Cry
Friends, former teammates, and supporters have shared Weatherley’s story across social media, urging donations. “Rachel has always been a fighter on the pitch—now she’s fighting for her life,” one post read.

How to Help
Donations can be made via the family’s Givealittle page. Shares and awareness are equally critical, organizers say.
