AUCKLAND, New Zealand (PS) — Auckland City FC’s turbulent Northern League campaign continued on Saturday with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Eastern Suburbs at Madills Farm, marking their second consecutive loss in the competition.

The decisive goal came in the 19th minute when Alexander Irwin climbed above the Navy Blues’ defense to nod home a well-placed corner, delivering the home side a crucial lead in blustery conditions.

Auckland City created several promising opportunities throughout the match but were once again undone by a lack of clinical finishing. Striker Myer Bevan nearly opened the scoring with a thunderous effort from distance that skimmed just over the bar. Eastern Suburbs responded with a dangerous chance of their own, as Isaac Bates forced a spectacular diving save from City goalkeeper Conor Tracey.

Midfielder Dylan Manickum came agonizingly close to leveling the score, narrowly missing the target after a sharp cross from Mario Ilich. In the second half, Auckland City continued to apply pressure but couldn’t break through a resolute Suburbs defense. Hector Echague rattled the woodwork with a curling effort, and Manickum missed a golden chance with a close-range header following Jordan Vale’s strong play down the right flank.

Captain Mario Ilich voiced his frustration following the defeat, but remained hopeful.

“It’s disappointing to concede from a set-piece like that,” said Ilich. “We had a few chances, didn’t take them, and on a different day it could’ve gone our way. We just can’t seem to find a win right now, so it’s back to the drawing board.”

Despite their recent struggles, Ilich emphasized the team’s determination to bounce back.

“The boys are working hard. We’re not getting outplayed — it’s about converting our chances. It’ll come. We just need to stay patient and keep grinding.”

Auckland City will aim to get their season back on track next weekend when they visit East Coast Bays AFC at Bay City Park.
