LONDON — New Zealand striker and All Whites captain Chris Wood has added another prestigious accolade to his resume, being named the Midlands Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) in recognition of a career-best season with Nottingham Forest in the English Premier League.

Now 33, Wood has scored 19 goals this campaign — his highest total in a single EPL season — helping drive Forest’s climb into the top half of the table and into contention for European qualification.

The milestone also places him among the league’s elite scorers historically. With 88 career goals in the English Premier League, Wood now ranks 44th on the competition’s all-time scoring chart.

“This is a proud moment not just for Chris, but for New Zealand football,” said a Football Ferns spokesperson. “His consistency and impact in one of the world’s toughest leagues is an inspiration.”

The FWA also honored Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo, naming him Midlands Manager of the Year. The Portuguese tactician has transformed Forest’s fortunes in just 12 months, lifting them from relegation fears to a side chasing European qualification. While managing Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nuno previously earned the same award in 2018-19.

Forest club legend John McGovern accepted both awards on behalf of the recipients as the team continued preparations for their upcoming Premier League clash against Brentford on Friday (NZT).

Chris Wood’s Premier League Double-Digit Seasons:

  • 2017–18: 10 goals (Burnley)

  • 2018–19: 10 goals (Burnley)

  • 2019–20: 14 goals (Burnley)

  • 2020–21: 12 goals (Burnley)

  • 2023–24: 14 goals (Nottingham Forest)

  • 2024–25: 19 goals (Nottingham Forest)

Wood’s recognition comes amid a renaissance in his club career, with his leadership and finishing touch proving vital for Forest this season. His success is a beacon for New Zealand footballers aspiring to make their mark in top-tier European leagues.
