AUCKLAND, New Zealand — Wrexham AFC, the Welsh club revitalized under the ownership of Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, is expected to confirm a pre-season match in New Zealand this July as part of their international tour ahead of their first season in the English Championship.

According to sources familiar with the matter, but not authorized to speak publicly, discussions are underway to stage a friendly in Aotearoa. Potential opponents include Auckland FC — who took the A-League Men by storm in their inaugural season — or Wellington Phoenix, New Zealand’s established professional football club.

Auckland FC CEO Nick Becker acknowledged growing speculation following an Australian media report that hinted New Zealand could be part of Wrexham’s itinerary.

“I’m waiting for Ryan [Reynolds] to give me a shout about that one,” Becker said. “I’ve heard that rumour too, but we haven’t been formally approached about anything.”

The Sydney Morning Herald has reported Wrexham will face Sydney FC in July and are also scheduled to play Melbourne Victory at Marvel Stadium. That match is set for July 12, part of a four-stop pre-season tour that is quickly turning into a global showcase.

The New Zealand leg remains unconfirmed, but the anticipation is mounting.

Wrexham’s rise through the English football pyramid has captivated global audiences, accelerated by the success of the Disney+ documentary Welcome to Wrexham. The club secured a third straight promotion last weekend, defeating Charlton Athletic 3-0, and will compete in the Championship next season — one step below the Premier League.

Since purchasing the club in 2021 for US$2.5 million (NZ$4.1 million), Reynolds and McElhenney have injected not just funding but a storytelling flair that has earned Wrexham an international following.

While it remains unclear whether the Hollywood duo will travel with the team to New Zealand, it’s likely the documentary production team will be on-site, capturing every moment for the show’s next season.

Reynolds has previously visited New Zealand, including collaborating with director Taika Waititi, further fueling hopes among local fans for a personal appearance.

An official announcement regarding the full tour schedule is expected within the next two weeks.
