Japanese Star Defender Extends His Stay With the Black Knights

Auckland FC captain Hiroki Sakai has put pen to paper on a one-year contract extension, securing his place at the club until the conclusion of the 2025/26 A-League season. The veteran Japanese right-back has been a cornerstone of Auckland’s impressive defensive record, playing a pivotal role in their pursuit of silverware.

Since arriving at the Black Knights, Sakai has established himself as an indispensable member of the squad. His influence on the pitch is undeniable—contributing one goal, an assist, and being a defensive stalwart in a backline that has kept nine clean sheets, conceding the fewest goals in the competition. Additionally, he has played a key role in forcing two memorable own goals, including Auckland FC’s first-ever goal against Brisbane Roar and a crucial strike in the 2-1 derby victory over Wellington.

Sakai: ‘I Love This Club and This City’

The 34-year-old defender expressed his delight at extending his stay in Auckland, emphasizing the city’s welcoming environment and the strong bond he has developed with the club and its supporters.

“My family and I have truly embraced life in Auckland. It’s a beautiful city, and we feel incredibly settled here. The support from the fans has been overwhelming, and I genuinely love playing for this team,” Sakai said.

“I try not to look too far ahead because there is still so much we can achieve this season. But I just couldn’t imagine packing up and moving on at the end of the campaign.”

A-League’s Japanese Influence and Sakai’s Legacy

With 74 caps for the Japanese national team, Sakai remains one of the most high-profile international players in the A-League. Having represented Japan at three FIFA World Cups and two Olympic Games, he brings invaluable experience to the league. He is also among eight Japanese players currently competing in the A-League, forming the largest contingent of overseas imports.

Auckland FC head coach Steve Corica praised Sakai’s professionalism and impact on the squad.

“For all his quality, Hiroki is a very humble guy. He’s a consummate professional, a fantastic influence on the younger players, and a leader both on and off the pitch,” Corica said.

“Technically, he’s outstanding, and his work rate is exceptional. We all remember his last-man tackle against Melbourne Victory—it was a moment that showcased his defensive brilliance. Having him with us for another season is fantastic news for the club and our fans.”

A European-Seasoned Defender With Proven Credentials

Before his move to the A-League, Sakai enjoyed a distinguished career in Europe, making 96 appearances for Bundesliga side Hannover 96 and playing over 145 matches for Olympique de Marseille in France’s Ligue 1. His wealth of experience has translated seamlessly into his leadership role at Auckland FC, reinforcing the club’s ambition to establish itself among the league’s elite.

With his contract secured for another year, Sakai’s presence will continue to be a driving force as Auckland FC aims for domestic success and a potential championship run.
