Macarthur FC’s Assistant Coach Christophe Gamel Suspended Six Games for Post-Match Altercation

Macarthur FC assistant coach Christophe Gamel has received a six-game suspension following a physical altercation with Newcastle Jets goalkeeper Ryan Scott. The incident, which occurred immediately after Macarthur’s 2-1 loss to Newcastle on October 25, led Football Australia’s independent disciplinary and ethics committee to increase Gamel’s initial two-match ban to six games.

The post-match melee unfolded as Gamel, frustrated with the game’s outcome, shoved Scott, resulting in an immediate red card from referee Tim Danaskos. Following the incident, Football Australia’s match review panel referred the case to the disciplinary committee, which classified Gamel’s actions as “assault on a player, team official, spectator, or any other person other than a match official.” This offense carries an automatic two-match ban, which the committee extended by an additional four games.

With the suspension in effect, Gamel will be sidelined until December 23, when Macarthur FC faces the Central Coast Mariners. The ban includes the current weekend’s FIFA international break, during which no A-League matches are scheduled.

Macarthur FC’s CEO, Sam Krslovic, acknowledged the severity of the suspension, describing it as “excessive,” yet affirmed that the club would not appeal the decision. Krslovic highlighted that Football Australia and the A-League are focused on enforcing strict boundaries regarding sideline conduct, emphasizing that no coach or club official should enter the field of play or engage with players while they are departing.

The disciplinary committee’s ruling serves as a pointed reminder of the standards expected in the A-League, reinforcing the league’s stance on player safety and professional conduct.
